Made by Mabelette- Valentine's Day Cookies

One of my favorite traditions with my kids is decorating sugar cookies. We do this several times a year for different holidays including Valentine's Day. Here is my mother-in-law's fail proof recipe that I use everytime and my favorite sugar cookie frosting. We got a late start on decorating cookies last night and I forgot to take any pictures but I found an old one of when Emily was little and decorating Valentine's Day cookies instead.

Sugar Cookie Recipe:

1 c sugar
1 c margarine softened
2 eggs

Cream these ingredients together. Add:

4 c flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp soda
1/4 c milk
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp almond flavor

Chill 2 hours.

When I roll this dough out I usually do it in fourths at a time. Make sure to flour your surface well and add flour to the surface of the dough to keep from sticking. You can easily re-roll scraps. Transfer to ungreased baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes. You want them to be set but not brown.

Frosting:

1 c powdered sugar
2 tsp milk
2 tsp corn syrup
1/4 tsp almond flavoring

When I decorate with the kids I give each of them a paper plate to put their cookies on. Until recently I would frost the cookies and they would add the sprinkles. Now they are able to frost their own cookies in addition to adding sprinkles. Let the cookies sit on wax paper for 5-10 minutes until the frosting has time to set up before storing in a sealed container.

Have fun!

OMG! They look like so much fun! I might try bunny shaped ones for Easter.

I stuck with the old double chocolate: http://irishwishesarespecial.blogspot.com/2011/02/valentines-day-cookies.html
