Father Palmer

Put your right hand in, put your right hand out, put your right hand in and you shake it all about.  You give your life to Jesus and you turn your life around.  That's what it's all about!!

This is the newest song that Palmer has been singing around the house.  For the past few months my two boys have been going to a mom's drop off program at the Methodist Church.  It is a great program and has a wait list to get into.  You drop off at 9, pack a lunch, and pick up at 1:30.  The kids play games, have a craft, and a little bible lesson that the day is centered around.  It is very inexpensive ($13 per week for the two kids together) and the kids love it.

Bret and I are both cradle Catholics.  Meaning we were both born and raised Catholic and never really asked much about why.  We have been raising our kids Catholic but trying really hard to give more meaning to it.  That's not to say we don't encourage all forms of faith or allow our kids to experience other faiths either.  At this age the message is the same for kids and one that is great in any form.

However, it has caught Bret and I off guard the difference we see so quickly.  Catholics are not nearly as scripture centered as other faiths.  In fact Palmer, who has been eating up the teachings, can quote more scripture that I can.  He has been a big encourager in our home to read the bible more often wanting to "see for himself" the Word of the Lord.  Palmer has also been much more vocal about his feelings for Jesus with his songs, his praise, his love, and his prayer.

A few weeks ago during mass our priest talked a lot about devotions and praying for more men to join the cloth.  I think it was the first time that I really thought about Palmer in this light.  It used to be a mother's greatest honor to have son become a priest.  Every mother and grandmother used to pray constantly and encourage each of her sons to think about it.  We have lost that gift in our society, especially here in the U.S.

Bret and I jokingly talk about Father Palmer but in reality I have added this as a prayer for him.  We have also started to talk to him about this option.  Who knows if this is something that will every work itself out in his heart but as a mom I can hope.

I love that cute song that Palmer’s been singing. It’s adorable! I love that you’ve found a great program for your kids—and not at a super expensive price, either. I know what you mean about Catholicism not being as scripture-focused as some of the other denominations, and I love that Palmer is learning a whole bunch of Bible verses. Keep us updated as to how he continues to enjoy his daycare!
